A little time. A closer look.
Senso-ji is Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple. The approach passes Nakamise shops and Hozomon before reaching the main hall. Annual observances include the lantern-plant market in July and hagoita market in December; check the temple calendar.
Something to notice
Pause clear of the flow of people. Follow the rooflines from the gate towards the hall, then notice one small detail: a tile, a lantern tassel or the movement of incense.
A little consideration
This is an active place of worship. Keep prayer areas and entrances clear; follow signs for photography. Ask before photographing people or shop interiors.
