A little time. A closer look.
Kiyomizu-dera's timber stage opens toward the city above a wooded hillside. The temple approach and its buildings reward a slower visit, with the structure, surrounding slopes and changes in light as much a part of the experience as the view.
Something to notice
Use the official approach via Kiyomizu-zaka or Chawan-zaka; some online routes do not reach the grounds.
A little consideration
Follow photography signs and leave space on the uphill approach.
